Party history
New Zealand First was established by Winston Peters before the 1993 election, when it won seats in Tauranga and Northern Māori. It entered a coalition with National after the first MMP election in 1996. Later arrangements included parliamentary support for the Labour-led government following the 2005 election.

Final-year fees and apprenticeship support
New Zealand First proposed moving Fees Free from the first to the third year for full-time students who had passed all coursework to that point, and refunding apprenticeship fees in in-demand vocations after successful trade examinations.
Medicine funding and GP-managed waiting lists
New Zealand First proposed replacing Pharmac with a new purchasing agency, adding $1.3 billion for medicines, and a $925 million annual GP-controlled fund for specialist appointments and operations.
Housing commission and rental supply
New Zealand First proposed a housing commission, restoring rental interest deductibility, supporting prefabricated construction, and expanding social housing, including homes for seniors.
Water pollution and waste management
New Zealand First proposed prioritising waterway pollution, a national recycling and recovery strategy, and a waste-to-energy strategy, while halting new landfills.
