National was created in 1936 when United and Reform came together after Labour's 1935 election victory. The party first won government in 1949 under Sidney Holland. Following the first MMP election in 1996, National formed a coalition with New Zealand First, marking a change from the earlier electoral system.
Delegates met in Wellington on 13–14 May to establish the National Party from United and Reform.
Sidney Holland led National to its first general-election victory, ending Labour's period in office that began in 1935.

National proposed requiring urban councils to zone for 30 years of housing demand, changing infrastructure financing tools, and establishing a $1 billion fund to reward councils for additional housing. This records a campaign proposal, not an assessment of delivery or outcomes.
National proposed funding its tax package through spending reductions and revenue changes, including a 15% foreign-buyer tax on homes priced above $2 million and ending commercial-building depreciation deductions. These are campaign proposals, not enacted tax settings.
National proposed an average daily hour each of reading, writing and mathematics in primary and intermediate schools, yearly curriculum requirements, and twice-yearly standardised assessments for Years 3–8.
