Party history

The Green Party was formed in 1990, drawing on environmental activism and members of the earlier Values Party. It participated in the Alliance before deciding to leave that grouping in 1997. Standing separately at the 1999 election, the Greens won seven seats in Parliament under MMP.

    The Green Party of Aotearoa New Zealand was established and contested the general election.

  2. Leaves the Alliance

    The Greens left the Alliance and prepared to contest the next election separately.

  3. Seven seats under its own banner

    The Green Party won seven parliamentary seats at the general election.

Rent limits and rental housing standards

The Green Party proposed an annual rent-increase cap of no more than 3%, linked to the property across tenancies, with an exception for substantial improvements. It also proposed a rental warrant of fitness and a register of rental properties, owners and property managers. These are recorded proposals, not findings about their effects.

The Green Party proposed a universal Best Start payment of $140 per week for children under three, alongside changes to family income support. These were proposed entitlements, not a description of payments in force.
